Exploring Madagascar by Yobel Muchang

Quick Thoughts

Like most kids of my generation, the film Madagascar was engrained into my imaginative soul, and to this day Iโ€™ll occasionally hear the theme song playing inside my head (donโ€™t ask). So when I finally had the opportunity to travel to the land of lemurs, I told my ass toโ€ฆmove it.

Now with that lame joke out of the way, some quick facts. Madagascar is one of the most diverse environments on earth. The island has a wide range of climates and ecosystems, from the dry spiny forests in the west to the humid rainforests in the east. Considered the fourth largest island in the world, Madagascar is home to many different species of animals and plants, including some that are found nowhere else on Earth like the star of the show: lemurs!

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Lemurs - It goes without saying that the primary motivation of this trip was to make friends with lemurs. While that didnโ€™t happen per se, I did get some wonderful shots of them in their natural habitat.

  • Baobab Avenue - Located in Morondava, this famous stretch of road was named after the iconic baobab tree which can be seen towering over the landscape. Catching the sunrise and sunset views from this location is a must.

  • Bekopaka - The Bekopaka Tsingy National Park is located several bumpy-road hours north of Morondava. Itโ€™s a protected UNESCO World Heritage site that hosts a high concentration of limestone formations that are worth checking out, especially while suspended over the sharp ravine hanging on for dear life to a wooden rope bridge.

  • Andasibe National Park - A beautiful national park located in the eastern part of the island full of rare lemur species. Here is where I caught sight of the red ruffed lemur.

  • Malagasy locals - It was wonderful meeting the locals and experiencing the Malagasy culture. The people of Madagascar only showed us kindness, hospitality and friendliness throughout the trip.

Things to Know

  • Tsiky Tour - This was the tour agency we used to plan the entirety of the trip including hotel, itinerary, transportation, etc. It really made the experience much more streamlined and stress-free. Also they are very flexible based on your time and interests.

  • General itinerary - Fly into Ivato Airport near Antananarivo (Tana), drive immediately to Antsirabe. From Antsirabe another drive to Morondava. In hindsight, these drives were quite lengthy and Iโ€™d recommend taking a flight directly from Tana to Morondava. Explore the baobab landscape in Morondava before driving to Bekopaka for some hiking in Tsingy National Park. After a few days we took a flight from Morondava back to Tana to venture east towards Andasibe National Park to see lemurs.

  • Donโ€™t underestimate the size of Madagascar! Itโ€™s about twice the size of Texas and the roads arenโ€™t always the smoothest. I 100% recommend taking domestic flights to travel from one coast to the other.

  • There are four main airports in Madagascar: Antananarivo (TNR), Nosy Be (NOS), Toamasina (TMM) and Antsiranana (DIE). I flew into TNR airport located in Ivato, which is about 15 miles from Antananarivo.

  • While I didnโ€™t bring a drone, our guide mentioned drones are allowed within reason (e.g., if you bring one itโ€™s fine).

  • Climate varies wildly from coast to coast. For instance, near Tana it was quite pleasant and mild given the high altitude, but once we got towards Bekopaka / Tsingy area it heated up significantly. Factor that into your clothes packing.

Gorilla Trek in Rwanda by Yobel Muchang

Quick Thoughts

This experience was one year in the making. Letโ€™s rewind back to the beginning of March 2020. COVID-19 was just beginning to overtake the world as a flurry of news cycles brought its effects closer and closer to home. Amidst the growing chaos, I spontaneously booked a Rwandan gorilla expedition, imagining there was still time before the end of our civilization. I ultimately canceled the trip at the last minute after words of wisdom from a friend. THANKFULLY I heeded his warning because shortly thereafterโ€ฆthe borders shut down all over the world. This wouldโ€™ve left me stranded in a foreign country for weeks if not months. So Iโ€™m grateful to live in the timeline where I chose to use my brain, but letโ€™s pour one out for the idiotic alt-universe version of me that chose chaos.

Fast forward one year to a journey come full circle with a successful COVID-free Rwandan adventure exploring wildlife at its finest. Thereโ€™s probably a life lesson somewhere in this story, but you know what? Lifeโ€™s gotten too serious, so just enjoy the ride! Or at least enjoy my photos (:

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Kigali Genocide Memorial Site - Visited this site to inform myself on the atrocities of the 1994 Rwanda genocide where close to 1 million men, women, and children were massacred based on manufactured ethnic & class divides. Heartbreaking reminder of humanityโ€™s potential for evil when hatred rules our hearts.

  • Gorilla trekking - Nothing beats the adrenaline rush experienced as a silverback casually lumbers closer, pauses to size you up before dismissing you as unworthy of a beatdown. I couldโ€™ve taken him though..

  • Golden Monkey trekking - This occurred higher up the mountain range within a bamboo forest. The monkeys were fascinating, but I actually found the bamboo forest more breathtaking and almost magical.

  • โ€œBeyond Gorillaโ€ village experience - We spent several hours exploring Kinigi village and meeting the locals who were very hospitable and friendly, especially the kids who treated me like a celebrity!

  • Hรดtel des Mille Collines - Itโ€™s quite surreal visiting this historic site made famous through its portrayal in the Hotel Rwanda film. Itโ€™s worth a visit, and the film is worth a watch.

  • Ubumwe Grande Hotel Rooftop - Grab some drinks from the rooftop and enjoy the panoramic landscape view.

Things to Know

  • Uber Luxe Safaris - I highly recommend this team to book your travel experience! They took care of everything in the most professional manner: the itinerary, hotels, transport, permits, PCR logistics, the whole nine yards.

  • General itinerary - Day 1: quarantining at hotel until receiving PCR test done on arrival. Day 2: Kigali Genocide Memorial site visit and transport to Volcanoes Natโ€™l Park area. Day 3: Gorilla trekking in the morning, Beyond Gorilla experience in the afternoon, and PCR test for departure. Day 4: Golden Monkey trekking and transport back to Kigali airport.

  • Trekking duration - Gorilla treks can take hours of trekking through thick foliage and mud. Fortunately, not even an hour into the trek we encountered the Kwitonda gorilla family. In a rare turn of events these gorillas emerged from the rainforest and wandered into nearby farmland to feast on tomato crops. It made for wonderful photos, but donโ€™t count on being this lucky!

  • Trekking gear - This trip occurred during Rwandaโ€™s rainy season, but regardless make sure to bring sturdy boots, trouser and hat. The hotel provided leg gaiters which protects against mud and worse, with walking sticks optional.

  • COVID-19 PCR test - This is obviously subject to change, but keep in mind in order to pay for a PCR test in Rwanda, you have to go to a local bank and convert cash into a bank deposit slip. This can be quite frustrating so prepare in advance.

  • Malaria tablets - These are optional but better safe than sorry! Just make sure to take them a couple days before your trip.

  • Places I stayed: Kigali Serena Hotel and Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel.

15 days | Aug 2019 | Aerial view of Cappadocia, Turkey from a hot air balloon.

15 days | Aug 2019 | Aerial view of Cappadocia, Turkey from a hot air balloon.

Quick Thoughts

The first time I visited Turkey it was focused solely on Istanbul. This time I had the opportunity to explore the country and seaside terrains with two close friends in tow. The trip began on my own in Cappadocia with the obligatory hot air balloon experience, followed by a roadtrip with friends along the southwestern coast of Turkey, and ended with a solo venture into the town of Van to - no joke - hang out with their epic cats. The perfect ingredients to create a memorable trip.

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Hot air balloons over Cappadocia - As mentioned itโ€™s basically obligatory, but trust me the views are worth it.

  • Rooftops of Cappadocia - Just as obligatory is to catch sunrise/sunset or hot air balloon views from the countless rooftops.

  • Seaside town of Kas - Amazing resort-style place to relax and enjoy the stunning coastal views.

  • Thermal pools in Pamukkale - Iโ€™m a sucker for surrealism, and seeing this thermal snowy-white landscape did it for me.

  • Van Cats - I love photographing animal eyes, so when I discovered a town known for cats with heterochromia, I booked the flight immediately.

  • Akdamar Island - I enjoyed spending a day exploring this island on Van Lake. Most surprising thing was the number of strangers who asked for selfies with me. I donโ€™t think many Asians visit Van.. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

Things to Know

  • I purchased my travel visa through www.ivisa.com.

  • Book your hot air balloon ride in advance. I donโ€™t think it matters which agency you use, but just make sure to book the earliest morning batch of flights so you donโ€™t miss the sunrise.

  • Places I stayed: Azure Cave Suites, Kookaburra Pension, Villa Hotel Tamara, Pamukkale Ninova Thermal Spa & Hotel, Mavi Panorama.

Roadtrip in Portugal by Yobel Muchang

7 days | Jun 2019 | Drone shot of Sanctuary of Christ the King overlooking Lisbon, Portugal.

7 days | Jun 2019 | Drone shot of Sanctuary of Christ the King overlooking Lisbon, Portugal.

Quick Thoughts

2020 sucks.

Sorry had to get that off my chest..

Portugal though?? Amazing to say the least. I spent seven days with a close friend roadtripping across the country, constantly in a state of amazement at the surrounding wonders. We started in Lisbon, drove inland to the Serra da Estrela mountains, stopped in the vibrant city of Porto, then pivoted south along the coastline to the magical town of Sintra before capping it off back in Lisbon. Each destination has its own color and vibes which deserves undivided attention to fully appreciate it.

Best way to sum it up? If roadtripping through Portugal turned out to be the cure to a global pandemic, I wouldnโ€™t be surprised.

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Porto - My biggest regret was only having a day to spend here. Iโ€™d love to spend an endless period of time exploring this city.

  • A childโ€™s bliss - Being reminded that children have an amazing superpower: the ability to enjoy the little things in life, like chasing after bubbles without a care in the world.

  • Sintra & Azenhas do Mar - Sintra is this magical town built on an absurdly steep mountainside along the coastline. I still have residual nightmares of driving up the impossibly narrow mountain roads without smashing into everything. Yet here I am, wishing I could live there, the views are that stunning.

  • Lisbonโ€™s colorful architecture.

  • Praรงa do Comรฉrcio - I enjoy taking long exposure shots, standing patiently in one place allowing time to smooth away the chaos, leaving behind motionless serenity. Trying to apply this perspective to 2020..

  • Sunrise shot @ Vasco da Gama Bridge - Funny enough, I was upset with myself because I forgot my main camera gear for this shoot. But it led to a much-needed revelation. Iโ€™d become overly consumed with taking the โ€œperfect shotโ€ that I almost forgot to enjoy the moment as it passed me by. Definitely something Iโ€™ll take to heart going forward on my future travel endeavors.

  • LxFactory - My favorite place to explore in Lisbon was this hipster art district.

  • Pastรฉis de Belรฉm - The OG of egg custard cakes. Go here. Just do it.

Things to Know

  • Spend more time in Porto!

  • In Lisbon, try out the Lime scooters to get around. Cheap and quite the thrill.

  • Places I stayed: Porto Spot Hostel, Nice Way Sintra Palace, Lisbon Marriott Hotel, Sant Jordi Hostels Lisbon.

Weekend in India by Yobel Muchang

3 days | Apr 2019 | Akash the tiger bathing in a watering hole. Photo taken through the thick jungle foliage.

3 days | Apr 2019 | Akash the tiger bathing in a watering hole. Photo taken through the thick jungle foliage.

Quick Thoughts

Not gonna lie, planning a trip to India was quite daunting as I experienced a bit of information overload. I mean weโ€™re talking about a country with 4,000 freaking cities and the seventh largest land mass in the world.

With that said, my goal was to witness Indiaโ€™s wonderfully diverse wildlife and in particular: the bengal tigers. So I narrowed down my options for a weekend getaway and landed on Ranthambhore National Park near Jaipur.

The weekend only afforded me a taste of India, but after surviving a staredown with the King of the Jungle, suffice to say Iโ€™m ready for round two ๐Ÿฏ

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Key highlight was the wildlife safari (obviously). In 1.5 days I took 2,500 photos, mostly of tigers but also got an elusive leopard sighting, tons of langur monkeys, deer, peacocks, mongoose, wild boar, kingfishers, herons, and so on.

  • Galta Ji Monkey Temple - I spent my last afternoon in India hanging out with a bunch of monkeys, quite literally. It was entertaining watching dozens of playful monkeys dive repeatedly into the temple pool and wrestling nonstop with each other. Time well spent.

  • Cows own the roads - I understand cows are considered sacred in the majority-Hindu nation, but itโ€™s still quite the spectacle seeing a single cow able to force the chaotic and uncompromising road to bend the knee.

  • Speaking of roads, do you seek the thrill of rollercoasters but are afraid of heights? Well, driving in India is somewhat of its own adrenaline rush. Iโ€™d be lying if I said there werenโ€™t a few times I closed my eyes and whispered, โ€œJesus take the wheelโ€ while my driver nonchalantly weaved his way between cars, tuk tuks, cows, bikers, pedestrians, and chaos incarnate. But the more time I spent on the roads, the more fascinated I became at the technical prowess and confidence of the drivers (cows excluded). Take a few steps back and youโ€™ll see there are unspoken, hidden rules of the road that once discovered enable you to control the chaos and ride the current. Like a boss.

Things to Know

  • Travel Visa - In typical fashion I booked this trip last minute and almost forgot about the travel visa. Fortunately I successfully applied for a rush e-visa via this website which approved me in 24 hours.

  • I stayed at the Ranthambhore Heritage Haveli hotel which I recommend. They took care of my airport pickup / dropoff, my wildlife safari bookings, and are also located in close proximity to the national park.

  • I flew into Jaipur International Airport in Rajasthan followed by a ~3 hour drive to my hotel near Ranthambore National Park.

  • In total, I booked three safaris: two morning and one afternoon drives. Definitely recommend as youโ€™re not guaranteed optimal weather conditions or tiger sightings.

2 days | Feb 2019 | Closeup of Hagia Sophia Museum as seen through a glass of Turkish tea.

2 days | Feb 2019 | Closeup of Hagia Sophia Museum as seen through a glass of Turkish tea.

Quick Thoughts

Istanbul is one of the rare cities that checks all the boxes. Itโ€™s a sprawling transcontinental metropolis thatโ€™s withstood the test of time & humanity, which as a tourist means endless explorations of both the ancient & the modern.

This โ€œCity on the Seven Hillsโ€ also boasts one of the most impressive skylines which can be enjoyed from countless rooftop bars, cafes, & restaurants. Speaking of which, the food may very well be the highlight for most travelers itโ€™s that amazing.

With that said, the best part for me was *drumroll* chilling with the friendly stray dogs & cats that run the streets of Istanbul. But hey, different priorities ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Befriending this street dog with heterochromatic eyes.

  • You canโ€™t visit Turkey without trying Turkish coffee โ˜•๏ธ

  • The moment I landed, I went straight from the airport to Ortakoy Mosque and caught this stormy sunrise just in time!

  • Fish sandwich from the boat restaurant near Galata Bridge (Deniz Yildizi Balikci).

  • Watching the sunset views of Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia from Seven Hills Hotel rooftop.

  • Turkish street food is worth trying, especially roasted chestnuts ๐ŸŒฐAnd of course, try some Turkish ice cream & enjoy the show.

Things to Know

  • For a free rooftop view of Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia museum, check out Seven Hills Hotel.

  • There are two major airports, both roughly an hour away from the city so factor that into your itinerary!

  • Cheers Hostel - I highly recommend this place! Plus the hostel comes with its own dog (:

  • Get ready to encounter street dogs & cats everywhere! But donโ€™t worry, they are treated well & are quite friendly.

  • Use Uber.

  • Watch out for hustlers. I unfortunately had one taxi driver rip me off, and had another interesting incident. In an elaborate scheme, a shoe shiner walked ahead of me and โ€œaccidentallyโ€ dropped his shoe brush. I picked it up and approached him to return it. He acted surprised and grateful, followed by insisting in giving me a shoe shine. Luckily, my slow brain finally remembered I read about this scheme prior to my trip, so I hurried along my way. Apparently this is a method used to hook you into buying something. I respect the hustle.

4 days | Dec 2018 | View of the sky seahorse and seal @ Lower Antelope Canyon.

Quick Thoughts

Arizona is a roadtripping photographerโ€™s dream destination, as one hops from panoramic desert terrains and jaw-dropping canyons, to starlit nights and lush forests, all within a dayโ€™s drive. For that reason, a couple buddies and I decided to roadtrip through northern Arizona. I spent my entire childhood in the state, but it took me leaving to realize how stunning & diverse Arizona truly is. Come visit, you wonโ€™t regret it!

Key Highlights

Things to Know

  • I went right around Christmas time which means you beat the crowds, but make sure to bring a thick jacket. Northern Arizona gets quite chilly!

  • Donโ€™t bring a drone - theyโ€™re not allowed in the national parks (as of this writing). It didnโ€™t stop some folks from flying them around Horseshoe Bend, but take my advice: donโ€™t be That Guy. No one likes That Guy. That Guyโ€™s mother doesnโ€™t even like That Guy.

3 days in Myanmar by Yobel Muchang

3 days | Dec 2018 | Baganโ€™s pagoda landscape view during sunset.

3 days | Dec 2018 | Baganโ€™s pagoda landscape view during sunset.

Quick Thoughts

I had a blast exploring the ancient temples, engaging with friendly & extremely gracious locals, and traversing the enchanted foggy landscape whilst floating in a hot air balloon or zipping around in an electric scooter. Myanmar was magical to its core - I only wish I had more than a weekend to enjoy it. Next time I guess.

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Zipping aimlessly on electric scooters from pagoda to pagoda along the dirt roads. Trust me - best way to travel!

  • Hot air balloon ride over Bagan for sunrise. There arenโ€™t words to describe how breathtaking & surreal it is to be floating silently above a misty landscape with only the sounds of birds to keep you company (and the occasional fire blast keeping you afloat).

  • I lost my phone while riding along the dirt roads. And as anyone would do in the modern age, I panicked. Long story short, some locals came to help without hesitation and we found it! A bit worse for wear, but lesson learned.

Things to Know

  • Make sure to get your travel visa in advance! I realized the hard way of my own naivetรฉ when I almost missed my flight. Donโ€™t be like me: with 45 minutes before the gates closed, scrambling to get on airport wifi, taking passport-sized photos, completing applications online, refreshing my inbox every second for an approval notification like a madman, rushing to find an airport printer to print the visa, and making it with less than 5 minutes to go. WHEW!

  • BaobaBed Hostel Bagan - I ended up staying in a private room, and couldnโ€™t have asked for a more comfortable stay. Plus it was across the street from an e-scooter rental spot which made traversing even easier.

  • Zip around on electric scooters! Itโ€™s dirt cheap but also incredibly fun, especially once you go onto the dirt paths and explore the pagodas on your own.

  • Watching sunset atop pagodas - A popular attraction is climbing up the temples to watch the sunset. Having said that, most of the pagodas are off-limits now due to safety concerns. Luckily I ran into a local who took me to an open one, saved me from missing out on such an incredible view. I pinned the location in my maps (below).

  • Tipping locals - there was a handful of times when a local helped me out. Instead of paying them directly, they instead asked if I wished to purchase their goods (e.g., artwork). I happily obliged, but keep this in mind!

7 days | November 2018 | View of Singaporeโ€™s skyline from the eastern side of Marina Bay.

Quick Thoughts

In many ways, Singapore reminded me of an alternate universe version of Dubai, or at least a close cousin. Itโ€™s the epitome of glamorous living and architectural wonder. You canโ€™t help but wander around with a constant โ€œwowโ€ attached to your lips. Having said that, like Dubai I feel the most valuable element of Singapore is its prominent role as an international travel hub, bringing multi-cultural awareness & infusion into the region. Case in point: the food in Singapore.. *drooling just thinking back to it*

Key Highlights

  • Link to my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • Arab Street / Haji Lane vibes were right up my alley (pun intended). Felt great to relax with a beer in hand listening to live music on a vibrant street / alleyway.

  • View of Marina Bay skyline. Had to hop over some bushes and endure nagging bugs - still worth it!

  • Sunrise @ Merlion Park - Go early before it gets too crowded (: Also the place where I first tested out my drone.

  • Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom - Spent an afternoon surrounded by animals, so no complaints!

  • I randomly was upgraded to business class for my 1am Emirates Airline flight back home! When life hands you lemonade, you trade it in for mile high champagne and chug.

Things to Know

  • Singapore isโ€ฆhumid. Like โ€œwhy did I even bother showering before stepping outsideโ€ type of humid. Icing on the cake, apparently thatโ€™s the case year-round. Sooโ€ฆdress accordingly. Like a bathrobe or whatever youโ€™d wear to a sauna.

  • Everywhere in Singapore is food heaven. I definitely felt spoiled dining out and I highly recommend prioritizing food over everything when visiting. I swear, even the McDonaldโ€™s tasted better. And yes I love McDonaldโ€™s and I make a point to visit one in every country I travel to. Fight me. #FilletOFish #OreoMcFlurry #LargeFries #McDonalds4Life

Key Highlights

Things to Know

Quick Thoughts

10 days, 65+ hours and 1,300 miles driving, plus a bonus pothole knocking out my rental carโ€™s front bumper..thank God for coffee and duct tape! I spent the first half of the trip on my own (starting in Bergen) before picking up a friend in Trondheim. This way I got the best of solo roadtripping, being lost in my own thoughts, while also sharing the road and memories with the best company. Recipe for the perfect trip.

Key Highlights

Things to Know

  • Car rental: 4WD isnโ€™t necessary unless you plan to off-road! The roads are quite smooth, even up the mountains.

  • Youโ€™re legally allowed to camp out virtually anywhere. Having said that, there are some rules. Hereโ€™s a post I found helpful.

  • When I visited Norway, sunset time was after 10 PM, so factor that into any itinerary. Perfect for extended road trips!

Quick Thoughts

8 days, 27+ hours and 1,700+ km driving on the left side of the road. It was a daunting task especially traveling and driving solo..but Audible and Spotify were my best friends on this trip! By the way, Ireland is the definition of rain..LOTS of rain, but I grew to love it.

Key Highlights

  • See my collection of Instagram Stories from the trip!

  • The Ring of Kerry, Skellig Ring and Dingle Peninsula drives

  • Gap of Dunloe - Strickeen Mountain impromptu hike

  • Red deer sightings (in Killarney National Park), Irish ponies (near Cliffs of Moher) and sheep sightings (everywhere)

  • Glendalough south of Dublin, the town of Cobh, Cliffs of Moher

Things to Know

  • Driving is on the left side of the road. Kinda fun actually, once you get past the whole โ€œI may accidentally end up on the wrong side of the roadโ€ nerves. Ha. Ha ha..

  • Bring a raincoat. Assume it will rain non-stop, but donโ€™t let it ruin your trip! The calm after the storms lended itself to some of the most breathtaking views of Ireland.

5 days | May 2018 | Pic of Petra by Night

Quick Thoughts

Of the three main attractions I visited (Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum), Wadi Rum was by far the most memorable. Itโ€™s a surreal experience traversing across vast desert landscapes that once was the bottom of the ocean, and seeing the immense rock formations protruding from the sand dunes is otherworldy. If youโ€™re looking for an escape from civilization and to sleep amongst the stars, thatโ€™s the place to be!

Key Highlights

  • See my collection of Instagram Stories from this trip!

  • Exploring Wadi Rum desert with the local Bedouins

  • Petra by Night

  • Cave camping in Wadi Rum

Things to Know

  • Jordan Pass - Depending on your trip, this can save you time & money on entry fees including tourist visa fees and tourist attractions.

  • Petra by Night - This doesnโ€™t run nightly so double-check availability. Also, this can get extremely crowded so if youโ€™re interested in photographing it, make sure to either arrive early or try to stay inside Petra to beat the crowd.

  • Car Rental - While planning for this trip, I came across positive reviews for a local car rental agency, Monte Carlo, on Trip Advisor forums. I usually go with more established agencies, but after reaching out I decided on their service and found it well-priced and without issues. Sharing this as I know how stressful car rental can be!

  • Wadi Rum Accommodations - If visiting Wadi Rum (which I highly recommend), youโ€™ll end up staying in Bedouin camps after leaving your car or being dropped off at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center. Iโ€™ve linked the place where I stayed - donโ€™t expect glamping, but youโ€™ll have individual fixed tents and a clean shared washroom. You can also book desert tours directly including overnight cave camping which was quite surreal!

  • Flies, flies, and more flies! Bring some insect repellents, youโ€™ll thank me later..

3 days | April 2018 | Pic of Little Adamโ€™s Peak in Ella, Sri Lanka

Quick Thoughts

Wildlife photography was the reason that drew me to Sri Lanka, but I was also blown away by the incredibly diverse terrains and vivid landscapes. While geographically Sri Lanka may look small, it really does require more extensive time to explore fully. This was a quick weekend getaway for me, but the brief taste of Sri Lanka was enough to convince me I need to come back pronto!

Key Highlights

  • See my collection of Instagram Stories from this trip!

  • Wildlife safaris in Udawalawe National Park

  • Small town of Ella

  • Hiking Adamโ€™s Peak overnight for sunrise

  • Lush landscapes near Nuwara Eliya including tea plantations, waterfalls and rolling hills

Things to Know

  • While traversing via train is the best way to explore Sri Lanka, given time constraints I went with a hired driver. You donโ€™t necessarily have to hire a driver in advance - I booked mine at the airport.

  • The roads areโ€ฆchaotic, but they are somewhat a controlled chaos. Just strap in and find your inner zen.

  • You can book wildlife safaris through your hotels usually.

  • Hiking Adamโ€™s Peak is pretty intense (3-6 hrs roundtrip, 5,500 steps). I started the hike at หœ2am to catch the sunrise, and keep in mind based on seasonality the top may be crowded.

Quick Thoughts

Oman has a special place in my heart as it was my first trip since moving halfway across the world to Dubai in December 2017. And I was not disappointed! I once read itโ€™s considered the โ€œNorway of the Middle Eastโ€ which is quite fitting given the countryโ€™s wild camping allowance and diverse natural landscapes ranging from fjords to jaw-dropping mountain ranges to the lush Wadi oasis, desert sands and coastal views. During my 7-day roadtrip, I experienced much of this as well as the wonderful locals and I cannot wait to explore this country again soon!
